Rak: A Modern Table Lighting Inspired by Iranian Architecture

Combining Tradition and Innovation in Design

Inspired by Iranian traditional architecture, Rak is a kind of conical dome similar to Gonbad-e Kavus located in Golestan province. The idea behind this table lighting is consisted of 2 parts. The former is about the gestalt which is taken from Rak. Other Iranian architecture's elements including piscina, tiles, ornamental moldings also play an important part as the latter source of inspiration for designing the patterns of the surface. The final design presents the essence of Iranian identity.

Rak is a unique and innovative table lighting design that seamlessly combines traditional Iranian architecture with modern aesthetics. Created by designers Aminreza Shokouhi, Saba Beizaei, and Sasan Ghaffari, Rak draws inspiration from the conical dome structures found in Iranian architecture, particularly the iconic Gonbad-e Kavus in Golestan province. The designers have skillfully incorporated elements such as piscina, tiles, and ornamental moldings to create intricate patterns on the surface of the lighting.

One of the standout features of Rak is its use of Persian-originated patterns in a lighting design. While the inspiration is rooted in traditional elements of Iranian design, the overall combination of the product is modern, maintaining a sense of simplicity and functionality. The designers have successfully captured the essence of Iranian identity in a contemporary and visually striking piece.

The realization of Rak involves the use of ceramic for the lighting's body material. The patterns are thermal printed on the surface, adding depth and texture to the design. The electrical system and light source are located in the lower part of the lighting, while a mirror is inserted in the upper part. This clever integration of components allows the light to be emitted and reflected in the ambient, creating a captivating visual experience.

Measuring 120 mm x 120 mm x 275 mm, Rak is a compact and versatile lighting solution that can easily fit into various interior settings. Its unique form and patterns make it a statement piece that adds a touch of elegance and cultural richness to any space.

The Rak design project began in April 2017 in Iran and was completed in October 2017. It was exhibited at the Deco Persian design festival in December 2017, where it garnered attention and appreciation for its innovative approach to blending tradition and modernity.

Rak has received recognition for its exceptional design. It was awarded the Iron A' Design Award in the Lighting Products and Fixtures Design category in 2018. This prestigious award is given to well-designed, practical, and innovative creations that meet professional and industrial requirements. Rak's integration of industry best practices, competent technical characteristics, and its ability to evoke positive emotions contribute to its status as a design that enhances the world we live in.

Rak is more than just a table lighting product. It is an object that beautifully illustrates the interplay between forms and graphics, modernity and tradition. The dome-like shape, reminiscent of the Rak in Iranian architecture, is complemented by graphics inspired by Iranian tiles. The designers have also incorporated bilateral symmetry and traditional Iranian colors to create captivating color compositions. The act of pulling the lid up and down to emit and dim the light evokes the essence of ancient Iranian lanterns, adding a touch of nostalgia and charm to the design.
